“Inspired by the stunning Gabriela from @brielamour89 who has documented her journey with acne. Accepting your skin textures. Embracing what you look like and realizing it doesn’t define your worth and you can still adorn yourself the way you want. You don’t have to hide. I love how she does her makeup, hair and her general style”. - Dunielle

“Watching beautiful people smoke and watching how people smoke differently. This piece is a good representation of being able to see all the different layers- you can still see all the original pencil marks. I like seeing the human marks.” - Dunielle

“My practice is shifting. It’s hard to care about beauty when the world is in a pandemic. After several existential crisises, my passion for these portraits returned. The love of makeup and getting dressed in general returned. Time is going to pass regardless of what I do (or do not do), so I may as well enjoy myself. Don’t take everything so seriously. Wear the yellow blush!... Painting your face changes the way you walk in the world. It turns up your confidence and you just feel better. Plus it can be a great distraction from all the worry.” - Dunielle

“I want to focus on the flaws. The things we want to hide. Because there isn’t anything wrong with it. We just got caught up in someone else’s ideal and it was capitalized on! It’s all fake. It’s all fake. It’s all fake. And fun. And creative. And ever changing.” - Dunielle

“The ritual of putting on lipstick is so glamorous and intimate. Opening the bullet and twisting it up… and then seeing how they look at themselves in the mirror as they apply. It’s beautiful. It’s a genuine glimpse into someone else’s brain.” - Dunielle

Not only is Brittany Murphy known for her iconic roles, but her early death was a tragedy and still remains a mystery. As the subject, Brittany’s ability to embody innocence in her characters and her iconic doe-eyed look is captured. This, contrasted with smudged tears, takes the viewer to a more vulnerable side of makeup, where mascara takes the form of desolation and taints tears thus producing a literal representation of inner sorrow and darkness.

Fun Fact: Dunielle’s paintings are also featured in the film “Theirs” from MADE/UP
For the past six years, Dunielle has been focusing on stylized portraiture. Inspired by runway looks from some of her favourite makeup artists and fashion designers (Pat McGrath, Val Garland) as well as her favourite celebrities and icons (Angelina Jolie and Eartha Kitt). Her work initially focused on the media’s definition of beauty and has slowly shifted to highlighting those physical attributes that for far too long have been considered flaws by society.
